Education

I am a graduate of Tennessee Temple University with a bachelor degree in Music Performance (Piano as my major instrument and viola as my minor) in May of 1991.  I received a masters degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in Music Education(major in conducting, piano and instrumental music) in May of 2006.  I am currently working on a doctoral degree in music and administration from Liberty University.  In addition to formal study, I am certified through level 5 in the Suzuki Piano method and through level 3 in Suzuki Guitar.  I love to learn and have expanded my musical knowledge this year by learning to play the bagpipes!  Instrumental music offers a lifetime of learning for all who dare to push themselves!

Bio

A gifted instrumentalist and vocalist, Ms. Tracy Coats has taught music and has shared her passion for music around the world.  Having studied with incredible musicians including Dr. Glen Draper (conducting), Dr. Roland Carter (conducting), Dr. Tsai(piano)  and Mrs. Gayla Austin (piano and choral music), Tracy has performed in prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall (New York City), Westminster Abby (London), Inaugural Prayer Breakfast in the election of President Bush in  2000 (Washington D.C.), the White House many times and numerous churches around the globe.

Ms. Coats' love for music and missions has taken her to over 40 countries.  One of her most passionate and notable missions endeavors is her work in Togo, W. Africa where she helps a missions team write and produce curricula for the public school system. This passion has led her to go to Togo 17 times to date.   She is also partnering with a missions organization in Dominican Republic and will conduct music camps during the summer for the schools in San Pedro.

Although she loves to travel and share music with others out of the country, her greatest thrill is to teach her students at Ooltewah Middle School.  Many of her students have continued to study instrumental music in college and are using their instrumental skills in church orchestras and local symphonies today.  "There's nothing more challenging or rewarding than teaching a child with no previous instrumental experience and helping them unlock their potential on their instrument of choice", Ms. Tracy Coats.

Under her direction, the OMS band has competed in the Disney Festival in Orlando in 2006 and 2008, performed in King's Island's Spookfest every year, competed in music festivals such as Music in the Parks and Music Festivals of America on many occasions.  OMS is best known for concerts in the Ooltewah community.  Each year Ms. Coats has held a "Veddy Skeddy" concert for the community at a local park.  In addition to outdoor concerts, the OMS performs annual spring and winter concerts and performs annually with the OHS band.  OMS eighth grade band students have had the opportunity to march with the OHS band in two Macy's Day parades, McDonald's Parade, Bands of America performances and will get to march with the high school band this year in the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, CA on New Year's Day!
